An industrial door is usually a door specified with higher rated drive mechanisms and a 3 phase electric motor or Single Phase motor
The main types of doors used in the harsher world of the industrial sector are: Roller Shutter, Sectional Overhead, Sliding, Folding and High Speed Doors. There are some other specialised door mechanisms but this will cover 90% or more of the doors used in the UK. The industrial door has to specifically be fit for purpose and therefore it is imperative to understand what is required from the door and the environment surrounding it.

A roller shutter door is a door constructed from many individual steel or aluminium horizontal slats (Laths) and operated by rolling the slats around a barrel directly up or down, with the assistance of either a spring, chain operated gearing, or an electric motor and guides either side to hold the curtain secure in place.
Roller shutter doors are a very commonly used type of door for either commercial or industrial use and usually defined and specified by their intended use in the application. The benefit of a roller door is the vertical operation and compact nature of the door curtain once fully opened. The curtain is normally occupying a space between 300 and 500mm above the door height, depending on the height and type of curtain slat used. Most roller doors will be using some kind of electric motor as the cost of this is very close to a manually operated door for nearly every type of door now.

It is useful to think about whether the door needs to be an insulated double skinned curtain or a single skin steel curtain without insulation properties. Double skinned insulated roller doors of course also offer greater overall strength in the door curtain will have a higher wind rating when installed with suitable side guides.
The width and height of the door required will often define the model and type of curtain to be used as each have their limits and then the colour may also affect what is a stock slat or requires painting and therefore affects the overall price.
With massive leaps in technology and materials it is also now possible to have far higher speeds of opening and closing without going to what is commonly known as a high speed door.
Industrial doors then fall into 2 categories: High frequency of use and Low frequency of use, and this will define the need for a single or three phase electric motor drive system. A single phase motor is suitable for low usage (3-4 times a day) and a 3 phase motor is for high usage, especially if the door is very high or wide as this means the motor is operating far longer periods during opening and closing.
We do offer manually operated roller doors, but they are not very common these days with good quality electric motor prices being so competitively priced.

Size: An obvious one, but very often missed off for the information provided to us.
The number of daily operations: Check on the motor suitability for the intended daily use.
Insulation: Does the building need to be insulated with the door as well?
Security Level: What level of security do you need? We can offer up to an SR5 rating on some models if required
Method of Operation: Manual, electric, key switch, push button, remote control, and many other options site dependent.
Colour: Knowing the colour required up front helps a lot to decide on the best options for you.
Vision Slats: Will you need some light or vision through the shutter door, this is very popular nowadays in both industrial and commercial applications.
Ventilation: Does the door need ventilation such as in an underground car park or manufacturing facility.
High Wind Rating: In exposed locations you will need to be sure the roller shutter can take a battering during a storm or high winds in the winter.
This is not a complete list of questions as there are some very specialised applications for roller shutters but for us to decide and recommend the best model it is worth giving some thought to but we can run through all your options with you.

You may think an obvious answer, but insulated roller shutter doors offer far more than just insulation.
An insulated roller door will obviously provide insulation against the cold outside in the winter and keep the heat out when required in the summer. The thermal insulation will be different for various models depending on the curtain slats used and the additional weather sealing provided by the bottom, side and top weather seal.
An insulated roller door by the very nature of its construction will have greater lateral strength than a single skin basic roller door and therefore will usually offer higher wind ratings, not only because of the stronger slats, but also because of the tighter fit in the guide rails. An insulated roller door will sit down when closed with far less movement than a single skinned door and therefore has less rattle and noise in windy conditions as well as a greater resistance to the wind.
Security is also better with an insulated roller door, again by the fact the curtain is stronger and heavier generally. The curtain will sit tighter and have more resistance to a forced attack or any form of cutting as there are 2 layers and more folded sections to cut through.
Acoustic insulation is also a factor with any double skinned roller door as the foam core will reduce noise transmission far more than a single steel lath ever can. The attention to weather sealing all round the sides, top and bottom will also reduce noise ingress as well as dust, leaves and vermin.

Security barriers help to restrict unauthorised individuals from entering the premises, keeping your car park free from unwanted guests and leaving more spaces for your staff and visitors to park. By ensuring parking spaces are available for staff, it can help your staff to arrive on-time and help your business run more smoothly.
Security is an important consideration for any industrial or commercial premises. If your site contains any expensive equipment or machinery then a robust parking barrier can deter potential thieves and clearly define your sites perimeter. These additional security measures can also help to make your staff and visitors feel more safe and secure when parking at your premises.
Depending on the location of your business, you may find that unauthorised vehicles use your premises to take a shortcut to their destination. This can cause potential accidents by having unnecessary levels of traffic in your car park, creating a hazardous environment for both staff and visitors.
